Lake İznik and Historic Town

Marmara's Most Enchanting Lake, Sunken Basilica, and 8,000-Year Civilization Heritage

İznik Gölü kıyısı ve kuş bakışı şehir manzarası

Lake İznik, the largest natural lake in the Marmara Region and the fifth largest in Turkey, is a captivating nature and culture destination surrounded by olive groves and fruit orchards, featuring streets reminiscent of an open-air museum and city walls on the UNESCO World Heritage Tentative List. Spanning a rich past from antiquity to the Ottoman era, İznik—with its world-famous Sunken Basilica lying on the lake floor, historic mosques, tile workshops, and delicious culinary stops along the shore—is one of the most fulfilling destinations for lake excursions.

Highlights & Key Attractions

İznik Sunken Basilica / St. Neophytos Church

Located approximately 20 meters off the lake shore at a depth of 1.5–2 meters, this 4th-century AD sunken basilica is a magnificent archaeological discovery visible from both the shore and the air. Associated with the Senate Palace where the 1st Council of Nicaea convened, it is a highly attractive site carrying immense historical significance for Christian history.

Historic İznik Hagia Sophia / Orhan Mosque

Located in the center of İznik town, this historic structure hosted the 7th Ecumenical Council of Nicaea (787 AD) and serves as a major turning point for Christianity. Later converted into a mosque by Orhan Gazi, the building presents a synthesis of Byzantine and Ottoman architecture.

İznik Museum & Archeology Museum Complex

The Nilüfer Hatun Imaret, one of the finest examples of Ottoman architecture, currently serves as a museum. The museum and its newly opened Archaeology Museum complex display a rich collection spanning Neolithic, Hellenistic, Roman, Byzantine, and Ottoman periods, including sarcophagi, coins, ceramics, and floor mosaics.

İznik Tile Bazaar & Green Mosque

Built during the reign of Murad I, the Green Mosque (Yeşil Cami) is famous for its minaret adorned with turquoise, green, and purple tiles, standing as an iconic landmark of İznik. In the Tile Bazaar located right next to the mosque, you can browse and shop for traditional handcrafted İznik ceramics.
