Spiritual Guardian of Bursa and the Birthplace of the Celvetiyye Order
HOME > CITY GUIDE > TOPHANE DISTRICT & PARK
The Tophane district is the first stop for those who want to watch Bursa from a bird’s-eye view and take a journey to the founding roots of the Ottoman Empire. Rising above the city walls, historic Tophane Park is one of the liveliest spots in the city—not only for its tombs, Clock Tower, centuries-old plane trees, tea gardens, and panoramic Bursa views, but also for its rich food and beverage options.
The tombs of Osman Gazi, the founder of the Ottoman Empire, and his son Orhan Gazi, who conquered Bursa, are located inside Tophane Park. Built over the remains of an ancient Byzantine monastery (Saint Marie), these tombs are among the most significant historical and spiritual symbols of Bursa.
Built in 1905 to mark the 29th anniversary of Sultan Abdülhamid II’s accession to the throne, the Clock Tower features 6 stories and stands 33 meters tall. With its aesthetic cut stone architecture, it is among the iconic landmarks of Tophane and the Bursa skyline.
Offering the finest angle to view Bursa and the foothills of Uludağ, the Tophane viewing terrace provides visitors with an unforgettable landscape experience. In authentic tea gardens set beneath centuries-old plane trees inside the park, you can sip your tea accompanied by an endless view of Bursa and enjoy the historic ambiance.
Sümbüllü Bahçe Mansion: Located just on the right before entering the park, this historic mansion belonging to Osmangazi Municipality is one of the most popular social facilities for dining accompanied by a spectacular view.
In-Park & Nearby Restaurants: Private venues like Hacı Dayı Restaurant serve Lahmacun & Kebab inside the park, and well-established restaurants serving famous Bursa Kebab are available right below the park and across the district.
Historic Tea Gardens: You can take a tea or Turkish coffee break under centuries-old plane trees inside the park with a panoramic view of Bursa.
Viewing Terrace & Clock Tower: Watch Bursa from a bird’s-eye view and take a photo in front of the iconic Clock Tower.
Tomb Visits: Visit the Tombs of Osman Gazi and Orhan Gazi to feel the historical ambiance.
Alp Guard Changing Ceremony: Watch the traditional Alp guard changing ceremony taking place in front of the tombs at specific hours of the day (Every hour on the hour from 09:00 in the morning until 17:00 in the evening).
Best Time for Photos: The view from the terrace looks mesmerizing toward sunset or in the evening when the city lights turn on.
Historic Balıbey Han: After your Tophane tour, you can visit art workshops inside the historic han located on the lower slope of the park.
