The symbol of Bursa and one of the most magnificent works of Ottoman architecture, the Grand Mosque (Ulucami) is not just a place of worship, but also a living museum of history and Islamic calligraphy. Commissioned by Sultan Bayezid I between 1396 and 1399, this monumental structure, with its 20 domes and unique architecture, is a must-visit first stop for every visitor coming to Bursa.
The soothing sounds of water from the massive indoor fountain that greets you upon entering, along with the priceless calligraphic works adorning the walls, offer visitors a peaceful and captivating atmosphere.
One of the defining features that sets Ulucami apart from other mosques worldwide is its massive indoor fountain positioned beneath an open dome. The refreshing sound of water combines with the mosque’s spiritual ambiance to instill a unique sense of tranquility in visitors.
The mosque walls and pillars feature 192 large calligraphic inscriptions and plaques. Crafted by the leading calligraphers of the era, these masterpiece works have established Ulucami as one of the most prominent centers of Islamic calligraphy.
Made of solid walnut wood without using nails or glue (crafted via the kündekari technique), Ulucami’s minbar (pulpit) is a masterpiece of art. The eastern face of the minbar features relief motifs representing the orbits of the planets in the Solar System.
Famous restaurants serving local Bursa Cantık, Pideli Köfte (Meatballs on Pita), and Iskender Kebab are located around the mosque and in the Historic Bazaars & Khans Area.
Spots for tea and coffee breaks are available in the mosque courtyard and under historic plane trees.
Feel the Serenity by the Fountain: Enjoy the peaceful atmosphere while listening to the flowing water of the indoor fountain.
Examine the Historic Minbar: Observe the minbar up close—a pinnacle of kündekari woodwork craftsmanship.
Take a Photo at the Kuleli Gate: Capture a memory photo of Bursa in the courtyard opening toward the Historic Khans Area.
Recommendation: Since the mosque remains active for worship, visitor traffic increases during prayer times. Planning your visit between prayer hours allows for a comfortable examination of the calligraphy and architectural details. Please ensure appropriate dress code standards are followed when visiting the mosque.
